           New Member Introduction

Welcome to Missoula Quilters’ Guild!                    printable pdf below

We are happy you have decided to join us. Our mission is to promote the appreciation of the art of quilting; to encourage friendship and fellowship among people interested in all aspects of quilt making; and to contribute to the growth of expertise in and knowledge of quilting.

We meet on the second Wednesday of the month September through May at 6:30 PM at The FairBridge Inn & Suites.

Our webpage is missoulaquiltersguild.org. If you are having difficulties signing in to our “Members Only” portion of the website please contact Barb Powell (forestweb4307@gmail.com) or Tava Smathers (montanatava@hotmail.com) for assistance. They will also be available at our monthly meetings to address technology concerns or issues.

Activities at our meetings include:

·       Block of the Month- Beginning September 2019 Toddy Gladwin (toddylou@gmail.com) will present a new Block of the Month for those interested in participating.  You will make one or more blocks and bring them to the next month’s meeting. For each block you enter you will receive a lottery ticket. One ticket will be drawn and the winner will take home all the blocks for that month!

·       Quarterly mini challenge- A theme will be announced in September, December and March for the following quarter. For those interested in the challenge they will make a 20” x 20” quilt depicting the theme.  In January, April and June (or September if there is no June meeting) the entries will be voted on by the guild members and the winner will receive a gift certificate to a local quilt shop.

·       Yearly Challenge- A theme will be announced in September and each participant will present their completed theme quilt (any size) at the May guild meeting.  Entries will be voted on by guild members and the winner will receive a gift certificate.

·       Guest Speaker/ Presenter- each month at our meeting we have a guest speaker or presenter that will educate us on quilting techniques, fabric choices, medium options, color fundamentals, and more!

·       Show and Tell- bring your completed quilts and show them to our membership! This is a favorite feature of our meetings… we have an opportunity to appreciate the talent in our membership and learn ideas we can use on our next quilting project.

·       PIGS (Projects in Grocery Sacks)- An opportunity to find a home for some of your unfinished projects that you are no longer loving! This is a fundraising activity to support our community outreach programs.  Those who wish to participate are asked to bring in an unfinished project in a brown grocery sack (your PIG). Include a one sentence “teaser” description of the project to describe the contents and entice bidders. At our February 2020 meeting we will auction the PIGS to new owners!

·       Semi Rummage Sale- The sale is generally in February every other year at our regular meeting.

Start sorting out those gently used treasures that you are ready to pass on to a new owner.  Items can include fabrics, sewing notions, small appliances, quilt magazines or books, quilt patterns and more!

·       Annual Christmas Party and Summer Picnic

Community Outreach

As part of our mission we are involved in several programs to share our love of quilting with our community. Our programs include:

Quilts 4 Kids- this community service project is dedicated to supplying handmade quilts to children in need of a hug. The quilts are distributed through our local hospitals, Health Department, and other agencies. In 2018 we distributed about 1,300 quilts to children in Missoula County. Quilt kits are available at each monthly meeting. For more information contact Emily Dix at alandemd@aol.com.

·       Comfort Quilts- lap quilts made with love are donated to Community Hospital’s Oncology Department and the Cancer Care Center at Community as a way to show our support to those struggling with cancer. Donations of quilt tops are welcome, and volunteers are needed for cutting kits, sewing quilt tops, long arm quilting and binding. For more information contact Sally Wright at sallywright@montana.net.

·       Quilts of Valor- Missoula Quilters’ Guild is an official Quilt of Valor Foundation group member. This program honors service members and veterans affected by war through the comfort and healing of our special quilts. Sew days are held the first Monday of each month (September through May) at Goin’ Quilting, and the third Monday of each month at Vickie’s Quilts Down Under. Completed quilts are presented to the service members and veterans through a special ceremony.  For more information contact Debbie Tomell at mdtomX2@msn.com or QOVF.org for information about patterns and specifications.

·       Mak-a-Dream pillow project – we provide lovely pillow cases for Camp Make a Dream to distribute to their campers. For more information contact Joyce Auer (jauer@blackfoot.net)

Sew Days

Twice a month those who wish to participate meet informally at the Latimer Street Fire Station from 9:00 to 4:30 for a day of sewing and fellowship. It is a potluck, so bring a dish to share and your own beverage. Don’t forget your sewing machine and favorite UFO!  See the website for upcoming dates… or contact Sue Olinger at sjolinger54@gmail.com for more information.

Quilt Show

We host a Quilt Show every other year, and attract folks from all over Montana, Idaho and Washington. In 2018 we had over 500 quilts on display! Our next Quilt Show will be on June 19th and 20th, 2020. Our theme for the Quilt Show is “Roaring 20’s” and our Quilt Show Co-chairs are Teri Bohnsack and Anna Waller. There are many ways you can get involved in the Quilt Show, both in the months preceding the Quilt Show in preparation and planning and during the Quilt Show for set up and staffing the various positions. Please contact Anna or Teri to see how you can get involved! You can also email mqg2020@outlook.com for more information.

Education/ Teachers/ Classes (ETC)

Our ETC Committee is dedicated to fulfilling our mission of growth of expertise and knowledge of quilting through workshops and classes. We generally have a special class series in the fall and spring of each year.

We have an impressive collection of pattern books, magazines, and rulers- all available to Missoula Quilters’ Guild members for check out! You can see our entire library selection on our website, or peruse the Library in person at each monthly meeting!  Contact Shelly Harris at shellyharris@blackfoot.net or Sally Wright at sally@wrightmontana.net for more information.

Join us for a sewing retreat! We gather once in the fall and once in the spring for a long weekend of sewing, fellowship and food at Glacier Camp on Flathead Lake. Contact Dorothy Gates (dottieg@bresnan.net) for the Fall retreat information. Contact Peggy Floyd at grizzlygirl@yahoo.com for more details on the Spring retreat at Glacier Camp on Flathead Lake.

Interest Groups

·       Stitchers in the Dark- this group meets once a year in February or March. Participants fill out a card providing their favorite colors, patterns, fabric choices, and any other information they wish to share.  Then each participant draws a card of another participant and over the year constructs 12 blocks to present to their “person” in keeping with their card descriptions (or not!) while keeping that person’s identity a secret until presentation at the annual meeting. All experience levels are welcome! Contact Kathy Klinge at moosethreaddesigns@gmail.com for more information.

·       Peace Quilters- this group works with Jeanette Rankin Peace Center to create a quilt for presentation to Missoula’s Peacemaker of the Year, as well as any other project ideas that arise through the Peace Center.  Contact Suzanne Sterrett at sylsterr@q.com for more information

·       Flock Block- this group started several years ago as a block exchange amongst Guild Members. We meet twice a year, usually the last week of April and the last week of October. A theme and/ or color is agreed upon at each meeting for the upcoming exchange. Each participant makes one block for each person in the exchange (usually about 12 participants). It’s a potluck, so bring your favorite dish! Contact Donna Britzius at dabritzius@gmail.com for more information.

Finally, join our Facebook Page for announcements and information!  We also have a Facebook Group to share quilty information with others.

Thank you again for joining Missoula Quilters’ Guild.  We are excited to get to know you!
